Atlanta is part of my roots now… and here is why.

About 3 years ago I left Dallas… I thought I’d attempt a digital nomad / vagabonding journey. Sounds more romantic than it actually is btw.

I had about 7 or so cities I wanted to explore and live in for short periods of time… Some I was interested in living in permanently and thought staying for a few months at a time would give me a great test drive… others were places I simply wanted to explore.

I started in Atlanta…I had family and friends here already and was seriously considering it as the #1 new residence. I quickly made great friends and loved it. About the time I was to check out my next city, I made an unexpected detour up north… WAY up north… which was NOT on my list of places. My plans changed… A valuable time and experience I wouldn’t trade… I was a stranger in a strange land. Midwest nice… isn’t Southern nice. Not even close.

Ultimately, I made it back south to ATL… it felt like home. (That’s a lot for a 5th generation Texan)… but it was the people largely. I love Texas and take great pride in it… and will always have roots, love, and a home there… but there is something about Atlanta.

I realized that I am Texan and Southern to my core. Cant change... won’t change that… EVER.

Earlier this year I set about visiting my roots… the people and places that made me. Most of that time was spent back in Texas… BUT Atlanta is most definitely etched in mind and heart and will be forever part of my story and life.

After being in Dallas and Austin for the past few months… I was so happy to come back a few days ago to see my people, to introduce someone I care about to my people and my adopted city, to have real grits, to bring my boots here and see and feel the color, energy, and flavor of the city again. It felt good, familiar, like home.

Though a native Texan…. Atlanta is part of my roots now.
