Being in the right room… and staying there | How to avoid self-sabotage
Let’s talk about being in the right room… and staying there!
A couple of people who’ve come into my orbit this year are Rod Hairston and his right hand Sujey Franco.
I’ve spent a lot of time with them over calls, in Austin at his Music Hill Ranch and this week in Dallas where we had a great evening covering life, business, upcoming projects….and of course I learned something which is bound to happen when you’re around Rod.
The conversation turned to a topic that’s at the core of of his life’s work…. Helping people overcome self sabotage and changing behaviors to align with your identity as you level up.
He knows a little about this… ok a LOT. He has worked with everyone from Lebron James, The University of Michigan Football Team, and has coached 3 Billionaires… (with a ) as they became billionaires… on this very subject.
How do you self sabotage? I’m paraphrasing of course, but you mess it up when you fail to align your identity with your new surroundings. You wonder if you belong there or don’t see yourself at this new level of success, relationship, celebrity, wealth, anything really… and you self sabotage or suffer from imposter syndrome and you lean on your previous identity and behaviors. (ok… that is a simplified version. He also talked about fixed vs growth mindset… creating behavioral patterns over 30-60 days, and much more… ya know just basic dinner convo)
He gave several real examples from executives and athletes we all have heard of, but the one that stuck out to me was when he said, Bradley, “You surround yourself with millionaires, it’s inevitable you become one. The pressure of being around them causes you to level up. The key is the stay in the room.”
He went on to say how people screw up when they don’t identify as someone who belongs in the room. You got invited to the room for a reason, you have value… continue to provide that and align your identity as someone who is that or does that or belongs in the room!”
Here is to staying in the room.
Bradley
